Hemorrhoids are swollen, inflamed veins in and around the anus or lower rectum. Internal hemorrhoids are usually not painful unless they protrude from the opening of the anus. External hemorrhoids are also typically painless, unless a blood clot develops within the hemorrhoid and causes it to harden. It’s possible to have internal and external hemorrhoids at the same time.
Hemorrhoids are typically caused by pressure and straining. Therefore, difficulty in eliminating the bowels and straining during childbirth are prime causes. Other factors that contribute to the development of hemorrhoids are aging, heredity, and chronic constipation or diarrhea.
Common symptoms include bleeding (bright red blood) while having a bowel movement, and itching and lumps near the anus.
Your physician may be able to see if you have external hemorrhoids by looking at your anal area. Internal hemorrhoid testing may include a digital exam where your physician inserts a gloved, lubricated finger into your rectum.
