Beginning in the early 1990s, patients with gastroparesis began visiting hospital emergency rooms in greater numbers, increasing the amount of hospitalizations from 1994 to 2014 by more than double and quadrupling expenses across this time. The Baylor College of Medicine research team also found that the number of gastroparesis patients with ER stays from 2006-2014 rose by nearly 24,000 to just over 39,000, accounting for more than $600 million in health care costs in 2014. These numbers reflect the rising role of gastroparesis care in the American health care system.
