Clostridium difficile infection (CDI) is among the most fatal gastrointestinal infections globally and recently researchers at the University of Minnesota have developed a new capsule-based method of delivering Fecal Microbiota Transplantation (FMT), a proven treatment for CDI, to patients. Currently, FMT is administered via a colonoscopy, which posed issues relating to cost and appropriate storage and handling procedures. Research into a FMT capsule produced a treatment that was less temperature-sensitive, thereby eliminating storage and transportation concerns and carried a slightly longer timeframe for treatment with similar outcomes. With this development, capsule-delivered FMT may prove to be the primary CDI treatment method in the near future.
