You will be placed on your left side, at which time your doctor will insert a sigmoidoscope into your rectum and slide it forward to examine your colon. A sigmoidoscope is a lighted, flexible tube with a camera on the end of it. The procedure takes about 15 minutes. There may be some bloating or mild cramping afterwards.
Sigmoidoscopy is used to check for colorectal cancer. This procedure is recommended for people age 50 and over.
Your physician will provide you with instructions on how to cleanse your bowel prior to your sigmoidoscopy. Be sure to follow the instructions exactly as they are given.
In addition, bring a list of your medications and their dosage, if you take any, and tell your physician if you have any drug allergies. If you’re taking aspirin or blood thinners, your doctor may ask you to stop taking them for a short while.
